Pawpaw Trees
This unusual small native pawpaw tree is not only strikingly ornamental with its delicate purple blooms in the spring and its long drooping leaves, but it produces clusters of custard-like oval fruits that ripen in the fall. The trees are insect and disease resistant. The leaves and twigs have anti-oxidant properties as well as insecticidal uses. Suited for zones 5 to 9 in well-drained soil. Protect from grass competition and strong winds in the first 2 years. Smaller trees (1-3 foot) will benefit from the use of a tree shelter. They are a small tree that grows to about 8 m tall and 3-4 m wide.
The seed we use to grow our pawpaw trees come from Carolinian native cold-hardy trees that are grown on our property. Some of our trees were identified by pawpaw foragers in cold hardy areas. We have made our own selections of offspring over the past 50 years from selected trees suitable for Southern Ontario conditions. They are all are proven to be cold hardy and great producers for our growers in zones 5-7.
Two seedling trees are required for cross pollination. I've read that I need 2 different cultivars or types... Click here.
Our seedling trees are grown from the seed we collect from our own farm trees. We carefully select the seed from our hardiest trees that originate from native pawpaw stands, forager collections, and local selections of the hardiest and sweetest fruit.
Two or more trees are needed for cross pollinization. Though some pawpaw trees are suggested to be hardy for climate zone 4, we do not recommend ours for that zone. They are ideally suited for climate zones 5b-7.
We are limiting sales to 5 each available size to ensure we can meet demand this season. Maximum of 10 Trees per person. Thank you!
